The Bomb Pop was invented by D.S. Abernethy and James Merritt in 1955 during the outset of the Cold War. The duo came up with this cool, frozen treat as a way to reflect American patriotism and ease tensions felt in households watching U.S. and Soviet Union navigate the possibility of a nuclear war. Original Bomb Pops were a combination of cherry (red), lime (white), and raspberry (blue). However, since 2015, several other flavors are available...the Bomb Pop story is not without its share of controversy, too. In 1989, Popsicle released the Firecracker Pop as the Bomb Pop’s direct rival...so whichever brand you enjoy...enjoy one today!
