The Summer I Turned Pretty (ft. I'd Lie)
May 27, 2023 · 24 min

This episode is part one of three in the Summer I Turned Pretty series - sponsored by the Jenny Han fans that read this book before Noah Centineo stole our hearts in the Netflix original, To All The Boys I Loved Before.  We’re talking circa 2009 - just three years after Taylor Swift’s Debut album. For the swifties that have been fans since Tim McGraw and Our Song, this is your time to tune in. This book is a hidden gem that wasn’t discovered for everything that it is until Jenny Han herself began to climb the social ladder. It makes you think how many books, authors and artists are overlooked in the beginning of their careers just waiting for their viral moment.

This book is severely cute, cheesy and light-hearted. Being 14 and in love for the first time isn’t a foreign feeling to anyone. Whether you fell for the wildly charismatic best friend, Jeremiah or the stand-offish bad boy, Conrad, there are parts of this book that are relatable for us all. A majority of the story is told in present time by Belly, with alternating flashbacks to Belly’s childhood and her summer life growing up with the Fisher boys. This book is represented by a song from Taylor’s Debut album because they are both underrated but so so good and meaningful to their original fans. The song itself, I’d Lie, is an ode to our one and only, Belly Conklin.Check out @dbatbpodcast on instagram for episode updates, giveaways and so much more fun!
