In this episode we explore the tragic history of Canada's residential schools and the devastating legacy they left behind. For over a century, Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their families and placed in these schools, where they endured neglect, abuse, and, in many cases, death. We delve into the dark history of these institutions, discussing the systemic efforts to erase Indigenous culture and the harrowing discoveries of unmarked graves that shook the nation in 2021. We also discuss the scientific technologies such as ground penetrating radar that that have played a crucial role in uncovering these gravesites, finally bringing to light the hidden truths of Canada's past.
Join us as we blend history with forensic science to reveal the stories of those who were silenced and the powerful impact of technology in the search for truth and justice.
We also hope that everyone takes a second to recognize the land that they are living on does not belong to them and was taken from First Nation communities during time of Colonization, that was not that far in the past. We want to acknowledge that the places we live and are currently recording from are the ancestral, unceded, and traditional lands of indigenous peoples. In Halifax, we are in Mi'kma'ki, the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq peoples. In Calgary, we are on Treaty 7 territory, as well as, the historical regional homeland of the Métis, which includes the Battle River Territory.
