This episode is all about Sewcialising (See what I did there ;-) )Sewing can be lonely, but it doesn't need to be, there are a wealth of resources available to allow us to nerd out about our favourite subject with fellow sewing nerds. In this episode I try to scratch the surface of how we can get out, bond more, and share magical tales of fabric adventures with people on our wavelength, instead of having to look at you partners/parents/siblings/friends bored faces whilst you try to tell them all about the new and exciting seam finish you've just discovered. This is by no means an extensive list, there are so many events you'll be spoiled for choice, but hopefully I can share some of them with you today so you feel set to go make friends for life.
In this episode, Tammy Honaman speaks with Robert Lopez, a multifaceted artist and metalsmith, about his creative journey, the importance of originality, and the risks involved in artistic expression. Robert shares his evolution from lapidary to jewelry making, the significance of community support, and how his art reflects his personal experiences. They discuss the challenges of balancing life and art, the innovative tools Robert has developed, and his aspirations for the future.
WE WELCOME BACK TWO RETURNING GUESTS—BAYAN FARES OF BADAN COLLECTIVE (@badancollective) AND EMAN TOOM OF HINT OF TATREEZ (@hintoftatreez)—FOR A POWERFUL CONVERSATION ABOUT CULTURAL PRESERVATION, APPROPRIATION, AND THE RESPONSIBILITIES THAT COME WITH TEACHING PALESTINIAN EMBROIDERY. The discussion kicks off with personal stories: how both Bayan and Eman came to teach tatreez, and what it means to them in the context of identity, diaspora, and community healing. The conversation dives deep into the ethics of cultural appreciation versus appropriation, especially as tatreez gains more global attention. The guests examine the nuances of who gets to teach, who benefits, and how to honor the legacy of Palestinian women who carried this tradition through generations of resistance. They highlight the harm caused when non-Palestinians teach tatreez without proper context or understanding, and they share ways to engage respectfully—through learning, crediting, and supporting Palestinian-led efforts.Together, the group doesn't just critique appropriation—we envision new paths forward. We discuss what true allyship looks like in the embroidery space and emphasize the importance of listening to Palestinians, following their lead, and uplifting their voices. The episode is an honest, generative, and hopeful space where complexity is welcomed—and where tatreez is reclaimed as both an art form and an act of resistance. You’ll hear about:>> 1:13: The inspiration behind why we began to teach tatreez>> 14:12: Non-Palestinians teaching and hosting tatreez workshops>> 31:30: Why there is an appropriate way to learn and practice tatreez >> 41:18: Hiding behind charity and the intersection with tatreez>> 52:12: How to engage with tatreez with cultural appreciationRate, Review, & Follow on Your Favorite Podcast Platform“I love Palestinian embroidery and Tatreez Talk.” <– If that sounds like you, please consider rating and reviewing our show! Dubai Boat Show was an amazing experience for me this year. I met some incredible people, presented on stage, enjoyed the media walk with fellow marine media and best of all recorded some fantastic interviews. One of which you are about to hear.
Wyndham Tops (great name huh) is a friend of mine through ICOMIA and he is a really interesting guy to listen to. With a fantastic history as to how he got into the boating industry and now working on one of THE most exciting projects in the world for yachting I wanted to share his story with you. He then suggested we include John W R Paul aswell to give another perspective to the marine industry in this region and share more information about the Leisure Marine Association MENA. This Association was only founded in 2020 but is so important to bring the industry together in this region to allow them to have more strength and ability to work with legislators, authorities and other stakeholders.
John leads Exalto Emirates, a prominent marine equipment distributor and retailer in the Middle East. John has 29 years of experience in the GCC, sharing his expertise with the marine community and now with you, our listeners.
Exalto Emirates LLC was founded in 1995 and is a wholesaler of marine equipment. The company represents over 80 reputed international manufacturers of high-quality marine components supplying to pleasure and commercial boat builders, shipyards, service providers, fleet owners and to the retail market thru a network of dealers. Operating from the head office in Sharjah and branch office in Dubai, the company supplies within the UAE, other GCC countries and across the greater Middle East, Africa, and Indian subcontinent.
Wyndham Tops is Senior Director for Marine and Marina Mobility Operations at Red Sea Global, with extensive experience in marina management. An active sailor and certified Yacht Master Ocean, Wyndham has held leadership roles at Abu Dhabi Maritime, Emirates Palace Marina, and Ferretti Group. His expertise spans marina operations, community harbors, and ferry terminals.
Now at Red Sea Global (RSG), he's working on projects where luxury, sustainability, and innovation converge to redefine how development is done. They are spearheading new development and tourism models, putting people and planet first to deliver projects that actively enhance the well-being of customers, communities, and environments. If you have seen any photos of the new resorts (Roxy Jacenko posted some just this weekend) you'll have seen they are mind blowingly beautiful and frankly, almost out of this world. Bringing boaters and yachties to this region is so incredibly exciting.
