TRAP and SOLAR OPPOSITES SEASON 3 EPISODE 3: Reviewed! Are you ready for your weekly dose of the CCCAH? Because I sure as hell am. Do you ever have the feeling like you haven’t heard us talking for weeks and weeks? Because we do not have that feeling, what the hell are you talking about? We deliver you an episode a week without fail. It’s actually quite crazy. Let’s talk a movie called Trap and an episode of a show called Solar Opposites. M. Night Shyamalan talks about making movies for American Masters: Creative Spark, a PBS production: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qHLEOn753IM. Night Shyamalan was on Norm Macdonald’s show for quite possibly the most charming interview a comedian has ever conducted with a filmmaker: https://www.netflix.com/watch/80243748M. Night Shyamalan has actually done so many good interviews it’s hard to choose which ones to link to here. So we’re going to go for a unique one with Jonathan Ross for the next link but in general, do seek out his interviews: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/m-night-shyamalan/id1434845244?i=1000428323390Solar Opposites was a fun time. Would you like to see Jeff’s unedited notes, ripped straight from our world famous google doc, comprising mainly of quotes from the episode? Of course you would. They are excerpted below, in lieu of other links: Save energy to punch tim burton for plagiarising his whole tone. How fucking dope was this queue. A Linda line. A history of lines. A category five line. I also can’t resist the siren song of ultra specific gear. Any line worth standing in doesn’t move. That’s stupid, fuck you!She always falls in love with the back of some guy’s head. What are they in line for?I don’t know how I feel about Justin Roiland’s voice. I was just trying to do a hobby you love but you really love stupid stuff that sucks.Wait, are they married, these aliens? When different friends compete over how well they know their mutual friend etc - pretty funny.Hipster: bread lines. Just to be poor and face in the same direction as you. Queuing as a hipster activity is great. A broadway adaptation of Tenet line haha! Reminiscing over events with photos. Save your spot is what a line virgin would say. The ancient and noble code of: a line check! He thinks he’s in a line but he’s actually doing a triathlon?Squats in line?Linus is in my name!!Elaborate fantasies of this character getting with the back of this guy’s head. The second line looks so legit! A microsoft zune face tattoo gives her the ick?Become one with the line force. My feet are gonna cum!Lines are metaphors for the human experience. Ah I just wanna be the first guy to get cool shit. Why do you like such stupid shit? The new dan brown novel is about how noah solved murders at night on his ark! Who or what is the pupa? Lauren tom is in this? From friends to futurama to this?Streaming bullshit of that last line will connect to the next episode? Will I confirm by watching the next episode? How is this for a twist ending: Jeff actually fully understood the plot of Trap. Don’t be fooled by him playing dumb. Despite the fact that sometimes he plays dumb so damn well. What a thespian. Social links: https://cccappraisalhour.show/https://twitter.com/cccappraisalpodcccappraisalhour@gmail.comSPOILERS BELOW FOR NEXT WEEK’S CONTENT: CHRISTOPHER’S pitch for JEFFREY: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bando_Stone_%26_the_New_WorldJEFFREY’S pitch for CHRISTOPHER:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Rain_(film) Hosted on Acast. TAYLOR SWIFT THE ERAS TOUR and NO NAME BY JACK WHITE: Reviewed! Welcome to the CCCAH, where we talk scepticism of technology while using technology! We hope your headphones aren’t snapping, crackling and popping. Because we need you on board for the ride. You’re our ride or die. Taylor has just yesterday performed the last show of her record breaking Wembley show. And Jack has just started picking up some of the best reviews of his career. So let’s get timely and current with a brand spanking new, multimedia music special. With your boys. The triple C,A,H.  Taylor’s version (is there any other version, really?) of her Eras tour film can be watched here: https://www.disneyplus.com/en-gb/movies/taylor-swift-the-eras-tour-taylors-version/OHLx94HKtS6XA great review of Taylor’s new album The Tortured Poets Department can be read here: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/apr/19/taylor-swift-the-tortured-poets-department-new-album-is-about-a-reckless-kind-of-freedom-if-only-it-sounded-as-uninhibitedLaura Snapes wrote a brilliant profile of the pop star from a few years back: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/aug/24/taylor-swift-pop-music-hunger-games-gladiatorsA more recent profile of Taylor as her world-dominating eras tour began stomping all over the world, leaving it’s mark in more ways than one: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/sep/08/how-taylor-swift-became-the-worlds-biggest-pop-star-againI have always liked this take from the Pet Shop Boys as I feel like it rounds out all the hagiography with some nice and healthy boomer cynicism. Like, Neil Tenant gets it but he is not fully impressed: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/pet-shop-boys-taylor-swift-disappointing-b2534588.html Jack White’s No Name can be listened to here: https://open.spotify.com/album/4j6OkbZmVIqJYDLJbiWHbX?si=ulmR8X99TRu71y1MVidgLg As discussed on the pod: how do established artists typically go about a press tour, in the year of our lord 2024? A trip to 1) Zane Lowe and Apple Music. A trip to 2) the Broken Record podcast with Rick Rubin and Malcolm Gladwell. A trip to 3) the WTF podcast with Marc Maron. And (we forgot to mention this one on the pod) a trip to 4) Conan Makes A Friend with Conan O’Brien. So ok, great. EARLY DAZE BY NEIL YOUNG and I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS: Reviewed! Welcome to another episode of the Cultural Content Consumption Appraisal Hour! We review culture properly here ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages … with lots of tangents along the way! This week we’re reviewing a film that came out during the pandemic by the auteur Charlie Kaufman, based on a novel by Iain Reid. Kaufman is a secret show fave making his debut on the podcast today. And yes, I have decided that we will be using the terminology that so or so has been “on” the pod when we review the work of artists. Because that is hilarious. Enjoy the content. And remember: consume mindfully. Constantly consume culture always healthily. I’m Thinking of Ending Things lives on Netflix here: https://www.netflix.com/watch/80211559Charlie Kaufman did loads of press (which then leads to him getting rightfully annoyed when he is described as “reclusive”) for I’m Thinking of Ending Things but this is my personal favourite. An online roundtable featuring other directors such as Richard Linklater and Boots Riley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoEhe4Ak-z0A great review of the movie by Peter Bradshaw can be read here: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/aug/27/im-thinking-of-ending-things-review-charlie-kaufman-jessie-buckley-jesse-plemonsAn even better review of the movie by Wendy Ide can be read here: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/sep/05/im-thinking-of-ending-things-review-charlie-kaufman-jessie-buckleyCharlie Kaufman explains the film to the BFI website: https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/interviews/charlie-kaufman-antkind-book-im-thinking-of-ending-things-netflixHe was also kind enough to talk to Indie Wire about it: https://www.indiewire.com/features/general/charlie-kaufman-explains-im-thinking-of-ending-things-1234584492/This website dedicated to Charlie Kaufman is one of the top five websites on God’s internet, no questions asked: https://beingcharliekaufman.com/index.php/ending-thingsNeil Young’s Early Daze can be played here. SPRINGSTEEN ON BROADWAY and FRESH MEAT PILOT: Reviewed! Let’s go cultural content consumption appraisal hour heads! One of us has a pilot episode of a sitcom from over ten years ago on the menu and the other has a near two-and-a-half-hour performance from a rock and roll legend from a few years ago to feast on. We have a lot of feelings about these things. Let’s get into our feelings. Let’s unpack them. Let’s analyse and assess our relationship with culture via these works. Let’s get up to speed with these cultural artefacts and then slow it down, subverting our modern day tendency to mindlessly consume without processing or engaging. This episode reflects where we are at with our respective cultural educations in our lives. On this week and on this day: this Thursday the 8th of August. Enjoy the show. Here is Bruce Springsteen’s “Springsteen on Broadway” which is no longer on Broadway (sadly, for your fomo-riddled boy) but is now on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/watch/80232329Here is the Wikipedia for Springsteen on Broadway, which will help you (dearest of dear listeners) sift through some of the factoids we discuss and potentially locate our errors before we do: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springsteen_on_BroadwayThis is the director of Springsteen on Broadway (and the director of the majority of Springsteen’s film work) Thom Zimny discussing this film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ep4NfMRRpEThis is Bruce Springsteen performing the song “My Hometown” which is discussed on the pod. This is a special performance recorded for the 2018 Tony awards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU5ZvcvLfc4Here is Jesse Armstrong’s pilot for “Fresh Meat” which is no longer on Channel 4 but is now on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/watch/70231771This is a 10th anniversary Fresh Meat Q&A that was held at the British Film Institute a couple of years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=597X7AgB7MkHere is Jesse Armstrong and his writing partner Sam Bain (the pair also created and wrote Peep Show! SOME KIND OF MONSTER and THE FIRE WITHIN: Reviewed! Season 4 is here! The cold open is a hoot and a holler. It’s part 1 in a tale entitled: TECHNICAL AMBITIONS BRING TECHNICAL ISSUES. It will conclude next week. Maybe. Cliffhanger? Who knows. The main technical concern for you, our dear listener, is that you have a show to listen to. Thankfully. For yet another week in a row. And that’s all that matters isn’t it? Unless you’re James Hetfield and in your feelings about other stuff on the Black album. Anyway. Some Kind of Monster, the rock doc on Metallica can actually be watched on YouTube. At least for now, as of the drop date for this episode. The 1st of August 2024. And you know what, dear listener? You should watch it there. Because one of us did. Because there are pretty reasonable automatically-generated captions. And hey, when you need subtitles, you’ll take whatever is going: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPXPZ10h50cSt. Anger is my favourite Metallica album (spoiler who wrote these show notes!) so excuse me hardcores!! But my lifestyle determines my deathstyle is some fucking Buddhism right there. Anyway, check it out and get over it (via this aptly-named channel): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtO7GukB0ho A recent Guardian review of Some Kind of Monster can be found here. If you didn’t find ours to go on for long enough. Which we didn’t either: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2021/jun/25/metallica-some-kind-of-monster-classic-documentary-is-a-cautionary-real-life-spinal-tap-taleEmpire’s review from back in the day is very cutting. And I quote “frankly, the band doesn't come off well. Hetfield’s a control freak, Ulrich’s a hypocrite and guitarist Hammett is pathetically non-confrontational”: https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/metallica-kind-monster-review/A metal head wrote a review trashing them and the album and for all the love they get, this is a fun contrast. Haters gonna hate: https://www.deadendfollies.com/blog/movie-review-metallica-some-kind-of-monsterOk, now it’s time to go back to the volcanoes. The people demanded it. Or something. I forget. Maurice and Katia Krafft. We missed you. The Fire Within is on iPlayer because Werner Herzog is the man: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001d7lc/storyville-the-fire-withinThe Wikipedia page for this requiem of a documentary is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fire_Within:_A_Requiem_for_Katia_and_Maurice_KrafftWerner Herzog talks about The Fire Within at length here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBI2uHjcwbgWerner Herzog (who is THE MAN, did I mention this yet?) talks about The Fire Within at more length here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBZsDaKFXw4The Fire Within was reviewed by the modern documentary magazine, which seems like an appropriate place for a review of this film: https://www.moderntimes.review/the-fire-within/Social links: https://cccappraisalhour.show/https://twitter.com/cccappraisalpodcccappraisalhour@gmail.comSPOILERS BELOW FOR NEXT WEEK’S CONTENT: CHRISTOPHER’S pitch for JEFFREY: https://www.netflix.com/watch/70231771JEFFREY’S pitch for CHRISTOPHER:https://www.netflix.com/watch/80232329 Hosted on Acast. LOOK AT YOU BY TAYLOR TOMLINSON: Reviewed! We love our lols here so it’s your lucky day CCCAH heads, your favourite time of year! When Brew.ding sends a representative to methodically rehearse a cold open with us and record a podcast reviewing a comedy special pitched seasons ago! We weren’t even doing cold opens back when it was pitched! Who knows what the show even was back then!? We were probably just recording phone calls or editing together our voicenotes. Do you recall, dear listener? Was it a blur of culture, content and ambition without any semblance of a format? Were we just reviewing the weather, the high street, our own daydreams and the very air we breathe? Who knows. We were just coming out of a pandemic, after all. Anyway, on today’s show we're talking Taylor Tomlinson! #ReviewOneThing. In depth! Even touching on her influences like Maria Bamford and Brian Regan, who we look forward to one day entering the chat that is the podcast universe too. Taylor Tomlinson’s Look At You: https://www.netflix.com/watch/81471774Look At You was reviewed for the New York Times by the fabulous writer Jason Zinoman: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/08/movies/taylor-tomlinson-look-at-you-netflix.htmlTaylor Tomlinson’s appearance on Las Culturistas (I can never spell or pronounce it on the first go, forgive me Bowen and Matt): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWXnM2sB_iwTaylor Tomlinson featured on the Hollywood Reporter stand-up comedy panel! Alongside other luminaries such as Mike Birbligia, Jenny Slate and Ramy … Rami … oh you know, the guy who played Freddie Mercury in that Queen movie we’ve previously chatted so much shit about … wait, what? Did we get it mixed up!? We’ll probably have to pitch Mr. Youssef’s show in the not-too-distant future to make up for the faux pas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSvbThzDwpUThe full first episode of After Midnight (featuring Whitney Cummings): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RI5tgjjwTATaylor Tomlinson featured on a show we love (we love it so much and consume so few other podcasts, we can remember the title of this podcast without issue, on a moment’s notice) called Films To Be Buried With: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/taylor-tomlinson-films-to-be-buried-with-with/id1408585620?i=1000597637082Taylor Tomlinson once hosted a podcast with Sam Morril called “This Is Important To Me” that basically stole some aspects of our format. Shameful, really: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/this-is-important-to-me-with-sam-morril-and-taylor-tomlinson/id1503629640We hope you laughed during today’s episode. As lovers of comedy, that is our sincere hope. Or you just politely hung out while we made each other occasionally laugh. That would be a 3-3-3 for you, really. One day maybe we’ll make you laugh via COMEDY COMEDY not just A PODCAST TALKING ABOUT COMEDY. But for now, I think we’ll all take catching up with our mates. And it’s 2024 so obviously we need a podcast to do that. Forgive the old men for screaming at the clouds, dear listener. That is what old men do to clouds. It is the natural order. And we discuss memes, gifs and gen-z slang like our boomer forefathers before us talked about hip-hop and boom boxes. Because the profound passing of time is an existential ocean you could drown in if you don’t instead choose to … lol. See you in season 4! Social links for brew.ding:https://www.instagram.com/brew.ding/Social links: https://cccappraisalhour.show/https://twitter.com/cccappraisalpodcccappraisalhour@gmail.comSPOILERS BELOW FOR ALI’S NEXT SPECIAL:https://open.spotify.com/album/5i6LJyHq9wxLSecf0N2Iuw?si=XIN-W_o7RKmOSlMx_BQI6g Hosted on Acast. M3GAN and ENGLAND VS HOLLAND IN THE EUROS 2024 SEMI-FINAL: Reviewed! Welcome to the CCCAH and a season finale for the ages! Or, hey, just another dopamine hit for your week! We’re covering the football today! Is it a soft launch of the sports pod? Or a thinly-veiled attempt at Southgate-propaganda in the immediate aftermath of the resignation that broke the hearts of a generation? Oh, and there’s also a movie we have to talk about. A campy blend of something and something else. or something. So let’s go! It’s time for culturally current cold (and hot) opens, thirty second games, odds and ends, two reviews for the price of one and guesses and scores. You couldn’t write a script like this. Let’s start the show.  First things first, our friend of the pod Jonny Mortemore who has put in hours of labour (*listening to the podcast!) deserves plugs for his immaculate and immense film trivia game, Filmaculate. EVERYTHING I THOUGHT IT WAS BY JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE and FIRE OF LOVE: Reviewed! Hey show fans! Welcome to the show! A perfect place for a fan of the show. And here in the show notes, let's dig deep into the media being reviewed. The art, the artefacts, and the critical moss that has gathered around and upon them. It’s another in-person edition of the show. So hold tight for lots of LAUGHTER and TABLE SLAPPING and LOUDNESS. A good time was had. But at what cost? Were lines crossed, onlookers offended, takes too scorching for the masses? We hope this episode doesn’t ruin our future podcast tour. What future podcast tour? Have you been on the waiting list for entry, just hanging out in the podcast waiting room for days? Well (much like some of the London Swiftie contingent who were saved by waiting list e-mails this week) your number has been called. You’re up! It’s CCCAH time baby, the bratty pod of the hot summer! So strap in for the heatwave! And/or take your top off! Totally your call on that one. But like, read the room. Aaaand … let’s start the show! The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar directed by Wes Anderson can be watched here: https://www.netflix.com/watch/81388090The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (and other stories) written by Roald Dahl can actually be read here: https://bobcarp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/dahl_roald_the_wonderful_story_of_henry_sugar_anbookfi-org.pdf And now for the wonderful story of the brat-adjacent content consumed this week. It requires us to go all the way behind the scenes. Once upon a time … dear listener/reader, a tick was sent. A message that is, with the title of something, followed by a tick. In this case, it looked like this.Brat ✅The first of many sent between Christopher and Jeffrey. Every subsequent listen would garner another tick in a new message. “Brat ✅ ✅” and “Brat ✅ ✅ ✅” and so on, until they had listened to the album about a dozen times between them. And communicated as much. The way it usually works is, dear listener/reader: one co-host sends the other co-host a tick emoji when content has been consumed; whether that’s the pitched content or other content relevant to our relationship. Ticks are our thing. Oh look, I’ve watched this. Oh hey, I’ve listened to this for a fourth time. Can you believe it, I read a book! And so on. And this is also how we keep track of when we’re ready to pod: when both pitches have been consumed! So anyway, for the 1st time in recorded pod history, one host actually couldn’t bring himself to send all the ticks. There was officially TOO MUCH. He felt the other co host’s withering glances and shit talk. So rather than annotate each link (as per usual) in today’s shownotes, I (and I think you can guess who I am this point lol this is like a bloody Roald Dahl story) am simply going to provide a list of naked hyperlinks of brat-adjacent content consumed below.
