Sources: USP Dictionary Online and MedlinePlus.gov (accessed 6-3-25)   Protonix = Pro-TAH-nix The first two syllables are basically the word “Proton,” as in a proton pump inhibitor. The third syllable claims the “N” in Protonix, so the last syllable is “nix” like the basketball team (The New York Knicks). We’re talking about social stories today. I’m an Ohio pharmacist and a full-time caregiver for my adult son with autism. I used a social story to prepare my son for a shot at our local pharmacy in February. It worked great, and he seemed less stressed at the pharmacy. Social stories could help your patients (and children), too.  Social stories are short, simple stories that prepare someone for a situation. In the case of getting a shot, you (the pharmacist/student/tech) are trying to make getting a shot predictable for your patient by explaining what they’ll experience in layman's terms. Empathy is important. Focus on them and their experience. In this episode, I use a custom example and explain how useful visual aides are. You can tell a verbal story or read a written one to your patient. You could record a video and share it on social media. Parents and caregivers can create social stories or consume your pharmacy’s stories, too. There’s more than one way to get a social story right. You can add custom features, like affirmations, comfort items, rewards, and more. You can share a social story minutes before a shot or a week before. We don’t cover pharmacology in this series. Just pronunciations. Today’s drug name was chosen from Davis’s Drug Guide for Nurses, Seventh Edition.    Written pronunciations are helpful! They are below and in the show notes on https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com/podcast.   oxcarbazepine = OX-kar-BAZ-e-peen The first two syllables sound like “box-car.” (Drop the “B.”) Baz, like basketball e, which is a short “e” sound, like the “E” in the middle of the word Elephant Peen, like a ball peen hammer Emphasize OX and BAZ. BAZ gets the most emphasis. She earned her PharmD from Creighton University in 2016 and has since had a broad pharmacy career spanning retail, hospital, consulting, and medical affairs.   Combining clinical expertise with lived experience, Danielle specializes in supporting pregnant patients, particularly those suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). After studying treatments for other diseases of malnutrition in pharmacy school, she became certified in pharmacogenetics and as an antepartum doula. This, along with a community of pharmacy entrepreneurs, inspired her to launch HG Pharmacist©, a blog to share information about HG, which later grew into Obstet-Rx©, a consulting company offering personalized medication management and patient advocacy to women worldwide.   Her subject matter expertise has led to board member appointments, speaking engagements, and media contributions for international magazines. In her work as an MSL, she has supported diagnostics for preeclampsia (sFlt-1/PlGF) and procalcitonin, as well as therapies for iron deficiency anemia and small cell lung cancer.   Through her podcast, Danielle shows how pharmacists play a key role in improving maternal outcomes.
