As a professional dieter, you've probably read a lot about compulsive overeating and the uncontrollable urges that drive food obsession. So much so, that you may even feel like you're addicted to food. And chances are, what you're experiencing feels like what you're battling is far beyond willpower and personal discipline. But here's the thing. If this was a true deficit in your character, you would not be where you are in terms of career, education, regular workouts and adherence to other things in life. So what the F*#% is going on here!? Today, we discuss how you can dump the constant raging voice that tells you to eat just for the sake of eating. I know. I've been there. It doesn't just yell, it screams, "EAT THIS; EAT THIS; EAT THIS NEXT; WHAT ARE WE EATING NEXT?" regardless of what is going on. In fact, you could literally be finishing a satisfying meal and the voice will yell to eat something else, even though I am hungry and genuinely do not need anymore. Don't miss today's episode as Coach Steph and I breakdown HOW this happens and WHAT you can do, starting immediately, to silence this voice forever. In this episode of the Outsmart Overeating podcast, we explore negativity bias, the brain’s tendency to focus on the negative over the positive, and how it affects your eating habits and weight loss journey. Negativity bias leads us to focus on what could go wrong, often using disempowering phrases like “I can’t” instead of “I don’t,” which can sabotage our goals. For example, negative thoughts like “I can’t stick to a diet” or “I’ll never lose weight” can undermine motivation and reinforce a belief that change isn't possible, so why even try? To overcome this, we discuss three practical steps in this episode: Identify Negative Thoughts: Pay attention to automatic negative reactions, like doubting your ability to make healthier food choices. Simply observe these thoughts without judgment, perhaps writing them down to increase awareness. Separate Thoughts from Feelings: Recognize that thoughts (e.g., “I shouldn’t eat this”) are distinct from emotions (e.g., guilt or fear). This separation helps you see thoughts as neutral ideas, not facts, preventing emotional eating driven by negativity. Decide How to Handle Thoughts: Evaluate whether a negative thought is valid. Ask, “Is this true?” or “What if this goes well?” For instance, instead of thinking, “I’ll fail at this diet,” consider, “What if I succeed by making small, sustainable changes?” This reframing empowers better eating decisions. By practicing these steps, you can rewire your brain to focus on positive possibilities, helping you make mindful food choices and progress toward your weight loss goals. Start small, stay consistent, and take control of your mindset to outsmart overeating. Have you ever bought cookies you’ve been craving, consumed the entire box, and then taken out the trash before your partner returns home? Or maybe you’ve ordered a salad while dining out with friends, but stopped to pick up a cheeseburger and fries on your way home so you can enjoy the food without feeling judged? Yeah, me too. Join me on this week's episode as we discuss why dieters like to eat alone and how the foods you eat in secrecy are never carrots and celery sticks. Other topics: Why you’ve attached moral judgment to these processed foods, you feel guilt and shame — which, ironically, as an emotional eater, only causes you to eat MORE. How removing the “bad” label will help you become more consistent in your success Why you may feel compelled to hide how you eat and how this perpetuates the cycle of overeating How hiding what you eat from other people is sending yourself the message that who you are cannot be valued What about you? Do you have a history of secret eating? How did you break the cycle? I'd love to hear your story.
