A podcast analysing depictions of mental illness and disabilities in film and TV. We may ruin your favourite movie, but we promise to do it with fun, humour, and perhaps an important lesson or two.

TRANSCRIPT HERE Steph is thrilled to be joined by one of her favourite podcasters from one of her favourite podcasts, Alex Steed from You Are Good. He is good! You are Good is good. All goodness all the time. Steph and Alex discuss the 2018 version of an oft told tale, A Star Is Born, where Bradley Coopers fame story is winding down as Lady Gaga’s is just beginning. We discuss the depictions of addiction and treatment; asking the question- should a therapist laugh at a patient’s botched suicide attempt story? Join us as we dissect the supposedly great love story behind the film, the toxicity of the entertainment industry, and whether we can truly separate mental illness from shitty relationship behaviour.   CONTENT WARNING:  suicide and suicidal behaviour, substance abuse and addiction, coercive control, death (parent and partner)   FOLLOW ALEX ON ALL THE THINGS: Listen to You are Good with Alex Steed and Sarah Marshall here! TRANSCRIPT HERE    This is no time for pettifogging! I am bombilating with anticipation to bring you the most impulsive, capricious and melodramatic episode yet! The scintillating winsome clinical psychologist Marie Camin joins Steph as they discuss with great vigour the beloved Schitts Creek. Marie shares her thoughts on who in the cast she would suggest is Neurodivergent, who she relates with the most, and how she approaches neurodiversity with her client base. Steph and Marie discuss the relationships on the show, how hard it is to appropriately diagnose autistic white cis professional males, and what exactly might be going on with Moira Rose (other than accusing David of being a disgruntled pelican).   CONTENT WARNING: some discussion of ableism/ misinformation about autism & adhd   FOLLOW MARIE ON ALL THE THINGS: MarieCamin.com to access Marie’s resources, assessment & supervision services, training, and stickers! TRANSCRIPT HERE   We’re back to our regular programming with a fun debate between a future psychiatrist and a psychologist, as Michael Watson joins Steph to talk Stutz, the Netflix documentary “about” Dr Phil Stutz created by Jonah Hill. Steph & Michael discuss how the unique revolutionary techniques Stutz employs aren’t quite so unique or revolutionary, and what Jonah was trying and succeeding to portray from this film. BUTTT OF COURSE within the context of the wild and gross texts that Jonah’s ex Sarah Brady shared from the actor in July this year. What do the texts say about how effective the therapy portrayed in Stutz actually is? And what actually IS a boundary?    Special thanks to Laura Packer for sound editing <3   CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of emotional abuse, coercive control, body shaming, death of a sibling (very brief) Follow Psychocinematic on Instagram,  Twitter and Tiktok! or join our Facebook Group! Nic joined Steph to gush about Chris Cunningham and his controversial (and deeply problematic) short film, Rubber Johnny. Nic shares why he loves it so much and how it inspired his own passion for film, as well as highlights the exciting time of early 00's music videos. Then of course Steph shares why it’s such a yucky depiction of disability and debate exactly how problematic it is. Nic's love for Chris Cunningham doesn't diminish but he learns a thing or two about disability representation maybe? Watch the short film Rubber Johnny, with music by Aphex Twin, directed by Chris Cunningham. Content warning: abuse, chemical restraint/prn due to behaviour, drug use, disability used as horror, discussion of visual gore and ableist tropes. Nothing bad happens to the dog. TRANSCRIPT HERE  Today we pay tribute to brother and editor of the podcast Nic Fornasier (11.10.1990 – 22.6.2023). We release in one episode, 2021’s originally 2 parter episode, where Nic joins Steph as they explore the dysfunctional family opus, The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Directed by Wes Anderson and written by Wes and Owen Wilson, it was Nic and Steph’s shared favourite film of all time.   Together they asked the question, can narcissistic dads who abandon their kids make up for the resulting trauma? And if so does this movie portray this situation with nuance and respect? Steph and Nic do their best at diagnosing the characters, discuss how the family relates to their own lives, and whether the Wes-isms in the film are helpful or harmful for the viewer.   We dedicate this episode to Nic.
